Chapter 22

Dante

I clambered over Lena to retrieve my cell phone as it vibrated on the nightstand. The clock confirmed my suspicion that it was early still—7:45 a.m. When I saw it was my father calling, I answered quickly in a whisper. “Hola, Papi. Buenos dias.” I climbed over Lena and made my way into the bathroom to speak in private. “Que pasa?”

“Chase viene al mediodía.”

Chase was coming at noon. I had better get a move on. I reached into the shower to turn on the water. “Okay, I’ll meet you at the warehouse at 11:30.”

“What’s at the warehouse?” Lena’s voice startled me as she rubbed her sleepy eyes while shuffling into the bathroom as I ended the call.

“Oh, just some work stuff. I have to go meet someone at the bodega in the city.”

Lena’s eyes narrowed. “Is this about Chase?”

I took her face in my hands and hated to lie when I looked into her hazel eyes, so I tried to avoid the question. “There’s nothing to worry about. That’s all under control.”

She wasn’t buying it. “Who was on the phone?”

I suspected by the look on her face that she already knew the answer. Lying now would risk losing her trust, but admitting I’d been lying all along was too risky for the same reason. “It was my father.”

She didn’t seem surprised. “And what did he say?”

“He needs me to deal with some work issues I’ve been avoiding. I shouldn’t be long.”

Lena searched my eyes for a sign of truth. I was relieved when she relaxed into my arms as I pulled her into a kiss. “I’ll be back before rush hour.” Chase should be dealt with by then, one way or another.

Lena’s eyes fell away from mine before I could read them. She sat on the toilet and wound a length of toilet paper off the roll as she peed. There was a sad acceptance in her reply when she watched me step into the shower. “Okay. Be careful.”

Lena and Trinity, cross-legged in the middle of the bed, fell silent when I entered the bedroom. I met Trinity’s suspicious stare as I went to the dresser. “Good morning, beautiful.”

“Lena tells me you’re rushing off to work.”

“Yeah, There’s a meeting I can’t put off any longer. But it shouldn’t take long.” I pulled a pair of jeans from the drawer.

Trinity scooted to the edge of the bed and stood to walk toward me. “So, let me get this straight. You haven’t left Lena’s side for days. She was forced to face Chase on video yesterday—in the presence of the bogan who tried to kidnap her, I might add—and suddenly there’s an urgent last-minute meeting and you’re leaving her all day? What could be so important, Dante?” Her cold stare challenged me. “What did your father tell you?”

With her tenacity, Trinity wasn’t going to swallow a vague excuse. I thought fast to concoct a credible story, but when I caught sight of the worried look on Lena’s face I lost my nerve.
